platform-shoesPlatform shoes have a particularly interesting history. Also known as Disco Boots for some. they are shoes with thick soles at least four inches in height, often made of cork, plastic, rubber, or wood (clogs). They have been worn in various cultures since ancient times for fashion or for added height such as their use in Ancient Greece for raising the height of important characters in the Greek theatre and their similar use by courtesans in Venice in the 16th Century. There even came a point when both men and women wore platform shoes which was in the 1970’s or the Disco era. Nowadays, platform shoes are worn by women everywhere on various occasions but not with crazy heels as high as 9 inches which famously caused Naomi Campbell’s infamous tumble on the catwalk.

Here are some tips on how to wear platforms, without taking a tumble ala Naomi Campbell:

  1. Start wearing platforms with lower heels to get your body adjusted to the change in your center of gravity.
  2. Purchase some silicon non-slip cushion gels to keep your footsies comfortable and preventing them from unattractively slipping forward.
  3. Practice walking around them in your home to get used to your change in height.
  4. Take small steps and try to land on the ball of your feet first.
  5. Walk slowly and keep your legs close together. Be cautious of the ground you are walking on and look out for any obstacles which might cause you to trip and fall.
  6. Make sure you have the correct posture. Keep your chest out and stomach in as this will counteract the change in your center of gravity and make you look more confident and sexy.
